Welcome to

What do you feed your dogs/puppies?

I feed Nutri Source Large Breed Adult and Puppy, I have tried many food over the years and I like this brand. I have nice weight on all my pups and adults, shiny coats. I give all my dogs milk kefir daily. I also cook turkeys weekly, rice, eggs, vegetables

Do you health test your dogs?

Yes I take them in at 2 years of age and do hips, elbows and hearts. My Newfoundlands are also tested and cleared for Cystinuria. My Bernese come from generations of good hips and are also tested at 2 years. All are done and certified by OFA.

Do you ship your Puppies?

I don't ship my pups, I only sell to families I can personally meet. I have families fly in from the USA and Canada often and take the pups on the plane with them which is a lot less stressful than flying alone.

Do Newfs, and Bernese shed?

They all blow their coats twice a year the spring I find is the biggest blow and the fall a lighter blow then they grow in their winter coats

I want an outside dog year around will these breeds do well for me?

No, they are very family oriented dogs and love being in the house with their family, they will follow you room to room to be with you. They want to be indoors, they are lap dogs, and will not do well living outside in a dog house alone at night. Neither breed is a guard dog or will do anything to help with coyotes, if your looking for an outdoor dog to protect your land these are not the breeds for you.

Do newfs drool?

They really don't drool like people think they do, sure they will leave a 4 foot trail of water from the water bucket after they drink, so can the Bernese My newfoundlands have a tighter mouth but remember "there is no such thing as a dry mouth newf!"

Do the large dogs eat a lot?

As puppy they can eat up to 8 - 12 cups a day when they are growing but as adults I only feed 2-4 cups a day to maintain their weight

Do you sell your pups to breeders?

No, all my puppies are sold on strict non breeding contracts

Do you stud your dogs out?

No I do Not.

How old do Newfoundlands live?

My oldest newf was 15 when we had to put her down, most of my lines come from these pedigrees and have had lots of Newfoundlands live past 12 years old

How old do the Bernese live?

Well I have only had bernese now for 9 years, Lexus will be 8 in July and Rocki 8 in August, both have had no health issues and both act ike puppies and I hope to have them for 6 more years at least! Most of my Bernese are full European Lines/pedigrees. They are not a slender small line like the USA and Canadian lines, females are very stocky like the males, fuller coats, longevity and not that timid temperament you see often in Canadian bernese

How are these breeds around children and other animals?

They are all wonderful and very tolerant with children but I find the Newfoundlands to be the best. Had a lady come one time for a Bernese for her autistic son, he couldn't speak and was a big 23 year old. When I placed the Bernese in the SUV with the boy the bernese was terrified at his screaming, so I went and got a newfy female pup and she climbed up into his lap and licked his face, she knew he was different and accepted him immediately.

Bernese are also wonderful around Children and make exceptional loyal members of the family

Do they Bark?

They will warn bark but never stand around barking for no reason.

Are these breeds calm?

The bernese can be a handful as puppies and will finally mellow as adults. The Newfoundlands are always calm never in a hurry to go anywhere but can still be little monsters as pups:-)

The bernese can be needy and want a lot of attention, as for the Newfs just enjoy snoring at your feet. Both breeds like to sit on your feet:-)

Bernese I find have a lot more energy than a newfoundland and love an active family, the Newfoundlands can be active too but also love to lay on the couch and watch movies and are not upset if they don't get a long walk

Are these breeds roamers?

No, they stick close to home and are creatures of habit, if they roam it would be because they weren't being fed or loved.

Newfoundlands only come in Black color?

They come in Black, black with white, brown, brown and white, white with black and gray. All Colors can be CKC registered

Brown Newfoundlands are a True Newfoundland color but not a "standard" color in Canada per the "club standards" but are still registered through CKC. I believe the story goes back to the early 1920's where 2 breeders had pups, one had a litter of browns and one had a litter of blacks. The breeder who had browns was selling her pups for more money. The breeder with the black pups had a father in politics and somehow got the brown Newfoundlands thrown out of the standard, which makes sense for breeders are nasty people and one would never want to see another succeed. The Browns are recognized everywhere in the world and so silly they are not included in the Breed Standards. The Browns are not a rare color or a new color and are just Beautiful Newfoundland's!

Is there a difference in coats on the Newfoundland colors?

Yes, the blacks are the fullest coats, then the browns and the landseers have thick winter coats but not the length of the black and browns and I find easier to maintain

Should I take my pup to puppy classes and obedience?

I think it's a great way to socialize the pups and have play dates. Obedience is very important with the large breeds and you have to establish your the leader the minute you take your pup home. Trust me the dogs will love you more if your the leader. If you allow the pups to get away with things you could have a spoiled 100-200 LB dog that doesn't listen

Do they travel well?

Get them use to traveling as pups and buy a ramp, A lot of my large newfs don't like the ramps for I never started them as pups and now they stand there looking at me to lift them in, most of the time it takes 2 adults to lift them in and 3 to lift them on a boat:-) as for traveling they are great travelers and enjoy going on trips

The Bernese Love car rides! Always make sure the air conditioner is on in the summer when your dogs travel with you and make sure to have plenty of water, neither breed can handle the heat

Is there a difference between the males and females Newfoundland's?

Size is the biggest difference. I find the males more loving but the females are more intuned to family and emotions. Males can be more stubborn and the females a bit moody at times, guess just like in real life:-)

Why do you breed?

I have always loved dogs, brought homes strays constantly as a child. Told my Mom that when I grew up I would have lots of dogs. I have 5 children and 2 of them have followed in my foot steps and also breed, we all are animal lovers and the dogs are our lives. I would like to downsize in about 5 years and take my newfs and Bernese into nursing homes where so many old people are forgotten, I know my big bears would put a smile on their faces and make someone's day

Are your pups health guaranteed?

Yes, I sell all pups with 2 year health guarantee , the health guarantee covers all hereitary and genetic problems, hips and hearts I stand behind my dogs for life.

Can I contact you if I have questions?

Yes of Course, I am always around and will always try to help in anyway I can

What if I can't keep my dog?

My contract states that the dog is to be returned to Heaven on earth and I will find a loving home for them or keep them.

Do you board dogs?

Yes I will board your newfs and bernese and fit in like family while your away

I charge 25.00 a day with food or 35.00 a day without food

Do you have help with the dogs? Yes we have 6 employess, 4 girls full time and 2 boys who work part time. My daughter also works here, I work full time, everyday and Love it. My Husband is always helping when he can but don't think he loves it like I do :0)

Is Parvo a big deal?

Yes it is a huge deal and is everywhere, the pups are given their first vaccines before they leave and will need to be kept safe and away from any public place including your front stairs/sidewalk

Parvo cannot come from a vaccinated dog, it comes from parks, places where people walk and how it spreads. Parvo can live in minus temps and extreme heat so very hard to control. Once they have all 3 vaccines they are safe to go anywhere

I do keep the pups until they are fully vaccinated against this killing diease if you do not have a safe place to keep them until fully vaccinated

Do you deworm the pups before I get them?

Yes they are dewormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. Your vet will deworm at 2nd vaccines and 3rd vaccines and is best to continue every 6 months as adults

We have stairs in our house is this a problem?

Any amount of stairs can be a problem to a growing pup, you may only have 4 but the pup is constantly going up and down, then it is like having a hundred stairs. It is just too hard on them and the stairs have to be blocked off until they are 2 and their bones are fully developed. Fit people can have a hard time on stairs so imagine how hard it is on a pup

If you have stairs build a ramp up one side

I work 8-10 hours a day is this a problem?

The happiest dogs are the ones where their humans are around, Newfoundlands and the Bernese can go a bit mental locked in a crate all day and can have mental issues and become very destructive. These breeds are again very family oriented and do best when someone is around. Personally I don't think it's fair to any dog to have it locked in a crate all day. There are many options these days, almost every city has a doggy day care or hire a dog walker

Do you feed raw?

I have tried the raw feed so I could have a honest opinion and had nothing but troubles with the runs. I asked my vet of 32 years what his thoughts were on raw and he said he put all his children through University because people have problems when they feed raw. Pet insurance companies are now refusing people their insurance plans if you feed raw. Also be careful of Breeders who make you sign contracts that you will only feed raw, most will void their health guarantee if you change over to kibble, the new thing now is fasting your dogs for a few days a week for wolves went without food for days in the wild. We are not living in caveman days anymore nor are our family pets wild wolves!

do you really think the wild wolves wanted to fast? Just Crazy what some breeders will put in their contracts or force their dogs to fast for 2 days, sure hope these breeders fast along with their dogs!

Study show that kept wolves eating kibble live longer than wolves in the wild...

What is a good dog Treat?

Honestly I never feed store bought treats, you never know what is in the treats or where they are made. I freeze carrots for teething pups I even buy timbits for my dogs, I feel if I eat them they can. So many good recipes online that are home made and safe for pets

Do you feed table scraps?

Yes all the time, if we eat it, they eat it with the exception of onions, grapes, chocolate. I cook turkeys weekly, and grow 2 huge gardens for my dogs and grow Milk Kefir, 16 gallons every 2 days. They love carrots, toast, meat, fruits, cheese, eggs. Don't feed them from your plates for then you will have a drooling monster while you eat:-)

Had a family out last week and he said he read on line that table scraps were bad for dogs, I have been feeding table scraps for years and never had a problem

I also cook hamburger, total cereal, wheat germ, eggs, cream cheese, molasses, garlic, oats, brown rice, flax. they loves these as treats

Too many of the dog treats out there have been recalled and are killing pets so be safe and cook your own. Lots of dog treat recipes on line and they are easy

When is a good time to spay/neuter my pup?

I "recommend" between 6-8 months, but you can have it done whenever you feel it is the right time. Some vets believe they should be fully grown but I disagree, I have neutered several males over the years and never stunted their growth or had health issues. Male dogs get raging hormones at 10-11 months, they stop listening, and start humping as for the females they come into season around 9-12 months. It is a Huge mess in your house for 2-3 weeks and any male dogs in the neighborhood will be at your door howling.

Do you have a waiting list?

How my process works is I require my questionnaire to be filled out and I will then book you in for a visit. I will not place you on a litter until I can meet the families in person. Placing puppies into the right homes is very important to me

I don't take deposits until they are 3-4 weeks old, I will put pictures up before deposits are taken

I have made exceptions if famlies are out of province, phone calls can replace the visit.

Where are you puppies born?

All my puppies are born in my home and are socialized and kissed daily. we are not a quiet home so they are used to loud noises, vacuums, music, cats and adult dogs.

Do you have a picking list?

I try to be fair to everyone, so I base the picking order on the deposits as they come in at 3-4 weeks

Do you pick the pup that will be right for our home?

I know a lot of the show breeders do it this way but I do Not. I allow people to come and see the pups and take the one "they" think is right for them, I don't sell to breeders so I don't have breeder friends coming first to take the best

How big are your Newf adults?

My Canadian lines are anywhere from 30-39 inches at the shoulders. My males range from 160-240 lbs and my females range from 120 - 230lbs. Maggie is 11 and weighs in at 219lbs

The AKC standards for Newfoundlands are 26 inches at the shoulders, they are breeding them smaller every year so they can fit nicer into apartments and condos.

Newfoundlands are Meant to be Giant, not the size of labs and they are suppose to drool but so many breeders are taking away the size and trying to breed dry mouth and looking more like labs everyday, they are also breeding them to have a pushed in face (short noses) this is not a newfoundland, this is a oversized pug

How big are your Bernese?

My males range from 130 to 150 lbs and the females are 100 -120. They are all very solid dogs with nice blocky heads, big feet and beautiful thick coats

Do you place your retired dogs?

No I do not place them, they stay with me and retire on my couch. I occasionally have young adults available that I have kept and haven't turned out to be what I want to be in my breeding program

I have 13 "retired" Large breed that live in the house and sleep around my bed, they are my kids and Yes I take them every where with me

Can we come out and visit the dogs?

Yes I want you to come out and visit and require a visit in order to get on a litter

How does the micro chipping work?

My vet micro chips the pups at 7.5 weeks, it is a chip the size of a piece of rice that is inserted into their back. The pup is micro chipped to me and will be transferred to you. These are great if your dog is lost or stolen

Do you refuse families? Not often most families that come out are wonderful but yes I have refused a few, not that I was trying to be mean just didn't think this breed would be the best for the family

Both breeds are wonderful and loyal, your couldn't ask for a better companion. I breed for Health, longevity and temperament, for me these are the most important things in a breeding program. All my puppies are sold to pet homes and I do screen all families to find the very best homes

I try my best to educate families on these big breeds so they know what to expect, I prefer phone calls over emails with 50 questions

I hope these questions helped, I am always around if you have questions or would like to set up a time to come for a visit.

"Just A Dog"

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."

Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog,"
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog,"
and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand
phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust,
and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog",
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being
"just a man or woman."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog"
just smile...
because they "just don't understand."
